Oakley - The History:

07/08/2014 08:12

Where it all began:

In 1975, Jim Jannard went into business for himself after questioning the limit of industry standard's. Jim started Oakley with $300 and the simple idea of making products that work better and look better than anything else out there.

Jim's first 17 years focused on MX racing and developed superior handgrip technology. He then developed the O Frame Goggle with a lens curved in the perfect arc of a cylinder giving superior peripheral and optical clarity.

The first world-class competitor to approach the company was Greg LeMond, who became a three-time winner of the Tour de France. Other pros like Scott Tinley and Mark Allen demanded the performance and protection offered by Eyeshades®.

Jim went back to his lab and started reinventing sunglasses for sports. Few believed it could be done successfully, and most thought the industry’s big companies could not be challenged. Jim used innovations from his previous inventions to create “Eyeshades®,” a design that began an evolution of eyewear from generic accessory to vital equipment.

Today, Jannard’s brand has become the mark of excellence and the solution to challenges facing thosewho cannot compromise on performance.

A Brief History

As new airplanes allowed people to fly higher and farther, many US Air Force pilots were reporting that the glare from the sun was giving them headaches and altitude sickness.

In 1929 The United States Air Force issued a commission for sunglasses that would perform under extreme conditions.
The revolutionary, winning design, was a gold Aviator with G15 lenses. The Ray-Ban brand name was patented in 1937 and is considered the birth of the brand.

The aviator would be followed by more iconic models including the Cockpit, Wayfarer and Clubmaster.
